Privacy, Student Data & District Confidentiality
Homework Habit for Schools is designed to support student engagement while respecting student privacy, district control, and the confidential nature of school-district discussions.
This page provides a brief overview of our privacy commitments. A final district implementation would be governed by the applicable district agreement, data privacy addendum, and legal requirements.
Student Privacy Comes First
Homework Habit for Schools is being designed for school and district use with privacy as a core requirement.
Our intended privacy principles include:
student information is used only to support school-approved engagement, planning, recognition, reporting, and related educational purposes
student data is not sold
student data is not used for targeted advertising
access is limited by role and permission level
schools and districts control approved use, access, and implementation
parent-facing visibility is designed to support students, not expose unnecessary private information
AI-supported features, where used, are intended to organize and route information, not replace teachers or privately counsel students
Applicable Student Privacy Frameworks
Homework Habit for Schools is intended to be implemented in alignment with applicable student privacy laws and district data-protection requirements, including where applicable:
FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act governs the privacy of student education records and district control over student information.
COPPA
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act applies to online services involving children under 13 and requires special care regarding collection and use of children’s personal information.
SOPIPA
California’s Student Online Personal Information Protection Act places limits on the commercial use of student information by operators of certain online educational services.
California Consumer Privacy Laws
Where applicable, California privacy laws, including the CCPA/CPRA framework, may provide privacy rights and obligations concerning personal information.
District Data Privacy Agreements
Before any live implementation, Homework Habit for Schools expects to work under district-approved agreements, including appropriate data privacy, security, access, retention, deletion, and subprocessor terms.
AI Boundaries
Homework Habit for Schools may use practical AI-supported tools to help organize school information, route planner items, reduce clutter, support dashboards, or identify relevant engagement signals.
The intended role of AI is limited.
AI is not intended to:
replace teachers
provide private counseling to students
make disciplinary decisions
expose protected student records
sell or profile students for advertising
operate outside district-approved boundaries
The school community remains the source of trust. The technology simply helps organize and connect information more effectively.
Member-at-Large Privacy
Member-at-Large access, if used by a district, is intended to provide limited, district-approved access to selected school information, civic opportunities, general campus updates, and return-pathway resources for district-resident students enrolled outside district schools.
Member-at-Large access does not provide full enrolled-student access.
It should not include confidential student records, private classroom information, protected enrolled-student communications, or other information reserved for currently enrolled students.
Parent Visibility
DueView™ and other parent-facing features are intended to help families see relevant academic reminders, due dates, study cues, and routine information.
The goal is to reduce guessing and support better student routines while respecting district rules, student privacy, and appropriate access boundaries.
District Confidentiality
We also respect the privacy of district conversations.
Any discussions with superintendents, cabinet members, CBOs, principals, board leaders, or district staff are treated as confidential business-development and planning discussions.
District-specific information shared with Homework Habit for Schools — including enrollment concerns, ADA estimates, budget pressures, implementation questions, internal priorities, pilot planning, or strategic concerns — will not be publicly disclosed without district permission.
District briefings, custom summaries, and proposal materials are prepared for the requesting district and are not intended to be published or shared outside the intended review group unless approved by the district.
No Public Use of District Names Without Permission
Homework Habit for Schools will not represent a district as a customer, pilot partner, reference, case study, or supporter without permission.
We may discuss general educational challenges, public information, and broad district-facing use cases, but we will not publicly identify confidential district discussions or private planning conversations without approval.
Prototype and Pilot Use
HomeworkHabit.com and related prototype materials may be used to demonstrate concepts, workflows, and possible district-facing features.
Any live district pilot would require appropriate district review, privacy terms, implementation rules, and approved access controls before student data is used.
